Members of the East Grinstead division in about 1883. All are wearing the summer uniform used from 1882 until 1894, which is very similar to the uniforms worn by soldiers during the American Civil War. The Constables are wearing the first pattern armlet, while the Sergeant is wearing one for vertical stripes which was later adopted for all ranks. Superintendent George Berry is sitting at the front - he became Deputy Chief Constable in 1885.
