Edna Osborne

Edna was a country girl from Battle in Sussex who ‘worked hard and loved a pint’.

She joined East Sussex Police Force in Lewes in 1959.

After her initial training she was posted to Hove, then on to Bexhill and back to Hove.

51 years ago this August she became the first woman to ‘Go Rural’ when she was posted to Uckfield.

Promoted to sergeant in Lewes she covered Newhaven, Seaford, Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath.

In 1969 she worked in the Juvenile Bureau which in 1974 was combined with Schools Liaison and was, for the first time in charge of male officers.

In 1977 the separate women units were abolished and the Special Enquiries unit was set up to fill the gap.

Finally Edna returned to lewes and worked at Police Headquarters until her retirement in 1983, just shy of 24 years.

Janice originally joined Burnley Borough Police Force as the first female cadet in 1961. Shortly after she transferred to West Sussex which three months later became part of Sussex Police.

As a Sergeant in both the uniform branch and CID she received postings in Worthing, Burgess Hill, Hove and Brighton.

She retired in 1981 when her twin boys were born.

Thanks to Janice and Edna. Great fun interviewing them, even if it did feel like juggling jelly at times!

Does she have to use the same bog, Sir?

'Give 'em a good swipe with yer handbag'

'I still want to feel like a normal human being'
